Malta has the sixth largest merchant ship register in the world, consolidating its position as the largest in Europe with a record performance in 2014.

n 2013, Malta ranked seventh and, at the end of last year, the Maltese Register of Shipping posted an increase of almost 6.5 million gross tonnage, up 12.5 per cent over the previous year.
Last year, registered gross tonnage was 57.9 million, with over 2,500 merchant vessels flying the Maltese flag. Transport Malta processed 191,376 applications from officers serving or wanting to serve on Maltese ships.
